This fantastic new documentary is a perfect complement to Control, the recent fictionalized account of the life of Ian Curtis and his band Joy Division. In 1976 after attending a Sex Pistols concert, four young men from ruined, post-industrial Manchester founded Joy Division. Though the group achieved only modest success during their career, they have proven to be one of the most inventive and influential bands of their era. Featuring interviews with surviving band members, the film examines their story through never-before-seen live performance footage, personal photos and newly discovered audio tapes.
MOVIE DETAILS:

"CONTROL"
Late-1970s British post-punk band Joy Division was one of the most influential groups of their time. Sam Riley gives an unforgettable performance as the troubled, enigmatic leader of the Manchester band, Ian Curtis, whose talent for singing intense, darkly infectious pop songs was subverted by mood swings, bouts of epilepsy and a crumbling marriage. Samantha Morton (In America, Minority Report) plays his wife, upon whose memoir the film is based. Feature debut of acclaimed photographer and music video director Anton Corbijn.
Official Web Site:

"Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten"
Son of a diplomat pines away in a British boarding school, dreams of becoming a rock star and graduates at the top of the class of '77, the rag-tag collection of punk and New Wave bands that challenged the corporate music world. That's just part of the mythical life of singer, guitarist and songwriter Joe Strummer, whose politico-punk rock band the Clash became one of the most influential rock outfits of the modern era. Filmmaker Julien Temple (The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle) has crafted here perhaps the best-filmed account of the British punk scene. Structured as a fireside wake, featuring Jim Jarmusch, Johnny Depp, Pearl Harbour, Bono, John Cusack and more, and including riveting rare film footage of home movies of Strummer and his nascent band and onscreen interviews old and new, Joe Strummer rekindles the fiery musical cauldron that spawned some of the most vital music of the Reagan years.
In celebration of Julien Temple's documentary about The Clash rock legend, Joe Strummer: The Future is Unwritten, new wave innovator and Bay Area favorite Pearl Harbour has put together a band for a rare performance. A good friend of Strummer's (and former wife of Clash bassist Paul Simonon), Harbour formed Pearl Harbor and the Explosions in 1978 in San Francisco, and the band toured with The Clash, The Talking Heads and Elvis Costello.

Following the performance, dance to guest DJs Skip and Shindog, from San Francisco's First and Foremost Dance Party, New Wave City. They'll spin classic Clash, Strummer and, in honor of Anton Corbijn's new film Control, Joy Division and New Order.

Be there as Pearl Harbour puts the Rock! in Throckmorton!
Don’t wait. This event will sell out.

Control picked up for North American distribution
02/06/2007 8:16:59 AM - 8:16:59 AM

(Hollywood Reporter) The Weinstein Co. scored a triple play at the tail end of the Festival de Cannes, nabbing North American rights for Anton Corbijn's Joy Division biopic "Control," North American home video rights to Tom Shankland's detective thriller "Waz" and Australian rights to the animated "Persepolis."

"Control," the feature directorial debut of music video vet Corbijn, unspooled in the festival's Directors' Fortnight sidebar and earned three awards there: the CICAE Art & Essai prize for best film, the Regards Jeunes Prize for best first or second feature film and the Europa Cinemas Label prize for best European film. The black-and-white portrait of Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis, who committed suicide at age 23, stars Sam Riley and Samantha Morton.

First Independent Pictures and Wagner/Cuban Cos. were in serious negotiations to jointly acquire the film until late Thursday, but the Weinstein Co. stepped in and closed the deal Friday.

The company made another black-and-white feature purchase, nabbing Aussie rights to Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi's animated "Persepolis." The adaptation of Satrapi's graphic novel about a girl growing up amid the Islamic revolution screened In Competition in Cannes and will be distributed by Sony Pictures Classics domestically.

Weinstein Co.'s video division picked up the British thriller "Waz," the story of a detective (Stellan Skarsgard) stalked by a serial killer. The film will be released in North America via the Genius Products home video label.

Weinstein Co. executive vp acquisitions Michelle Krumm and senior vp business and legal affairs Laine Kline negotiated the "Control" deal with Becker International's Iain Canning.

Ian Curtis had something about him, a tension or mood, that is unlike anything I've seen on stage at a rock concert since. I can still recall a PA announcement just before they came on stage saying "Ladies and gentlemen will you please welcome Stevie Morris and the JDs". Not quite what anyone was expecting!
Getting to know Dad

http://www.macclesfield-express.co.uk/news/s/105/105952_getting_to_know_dad.html

THE daughter of Ian Curtis, the Joy Division singer who committed suicide almost 25 years ago, has revealed how images and record sleeves of her father inspired her to become a photographer.

Natalie Curtis was just a one-year-old baby when her father hanged himself at home in Macclesfield. Being so young, she has no direct memories of him.

But she became fascinated with photographs of her dad as she grew older. Images published in 1980s’ weekly music papers, Joy Division record sleeves and other items from the era fired her interest in music, art and design.

Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis took his own life in 1980. He grew up in Macclesfield, attended King’s School and was married in the town, before joining Joy Division.

He was hugely admired by Tony Wilson, the Factory Records boss and Granada TV presenter, who became Joy Division’s number-one champion. The band released two critically acclaimed LPs and four singles, and were on the cusp of major success.

But Ian Curtis suffered from depression and epilepsy, and killed himself just before his 24th birthday and Joy Division’s American tour. His funeral was at Macclesfield Crematorium, where a memorial stone was laid.

Joy Division later reformed as New Order and had massive success. But Ian Curtis remains a key figure in rock music history.

Natalie Curtis grew up with her mother, Deborah, and started taking photographs aged four with her grandma’s camera. But she gradually became intrigued with widely-publicised photographs of her dad.

Now 25, she recalls: "Photographs of Joy Division probably had more effect on me than anything else, especially those by Kevin Cummins and Anton Corbijn.

"Kevin’s pictures were really beautiful. He took some early shots of Joy Division rehearsing. And Anton Corbijn photographed them in a tube station around the same time. Quite a few people photographed Joy Division, but these photographs really stick in my memory."

Kevin Cummins’ work regularly appeared in NME during the 1970s and Eighties, while Anton Corbijn’s other work included early record sleeves for U2.

Natalie added: "Joy Division sleeves were really cool. One of the best things about Factory Records was its aesthetic design."

After Henbury High School, she studied at Macclesfield College and in Manchester, and is now developing her photographic career.

A private, modest person, she does not exploit her connection to Ian Curtis. She says she is simply known as ‘Nat the photographer’ to many people.

But she added: "Macclesfield people are more aware that I’m Ian Curtis’s daughter. I was born in Macclesfield and lived there all my life. I grew up with all the publicity surrounding my dad and didn’t really know anything different. That had its ups-and-downs, but I suppose I’ve become used to it."

"I’m really proud of Joy Division’s music. I think it’s great stuff. And it’s lovely that people are still listening to it. I like lots of Joy Division records myself, especially Closer."

"I also like dance stuff and country music, like Johnny Cash. But I’m not musical. I tried playing piano as a kid but didn’t make grade-one. I’m really bad," she quipped.

Natalie currently lives in Manchester but retains strong Macclesfield links, through close friends and photographic projects.

"I love Macclesfield buildings and streets, and the green hills above it.

"I also love places like the 108 steps between the town hall and the railway station.
Deborah Curtis interview 2005 / 06

Topic 2: Questions about Touching From A Distance
Joy Division Central email to Deborah Curtis December 2005.
We like the fact that your book is clearly written by you, not a ghost writer, and it comes across as a very honest and personal account. Was it difficult to write? What was it like working with the publisher, did they insist on any alterations to the book after you submitted your first draft?

Fiction writers say that when they write sub-plots and references appear in the finished article that weren’t consciously put there. When you read your book after it was published did anything surprise you, or perhaps change your perspective on things?

There’s a theory that a lot of people could write a book, but don’t because they know they’d upset the friends and family that they wrote about – or based fictional characters on.

When you wrote your book you had a young daughter, and you were living close to Ian’s relatives and other people you were writing about. Did you leave anything out of your book because of this? More broadly, is there anything you wish you’d put in, left out, or described differently? Are you planning to amend and republish the book to coincide with the film?

We all change our views as time passes and we get older, and we’re interested about how you feel about one of the central themes of the book some 20 years after it was first published. You described how Ian idolised those who had died young such as Jim Morrison and others and you put forward the idea that, on some level, Ian had always intended to do the same. Is this still the way you look back on this, or do you see things in a different light now?

On a lighter note: In Touching From a Distance you recall Ian saying that "I'm going to make so much money you'll never have to work again”. We all know that the financial side of the music industry is a strange place where almost anything can happen – and it would be interesting to know if this promise came true (in broad terms that is, we’re not after copies of bank statements or anything!).

You may have noticed that at Joy Division Central we like to get to the bottom of every issue, no detail too trivial and all that - and we have a couple of questions of that ilk:

The first chapter of your book has the title “An Urban Soundtrack” (in Ian's writing, as are all the chapter titles). So we wondered whether this was an early or an alternative title of a Joy Division song, if not can you shed any light on the Urban Soundtrack reference?

The handwritten set list from the Marquee lists Soundtrack as the first item. It is not clear whether this refers to a song title or a pre-recorded tape. Do you happen to know which it was?

According to recent reports Bernard apparently hypnotically regressed Ian and recorded the experience on tape. You didn’t mention this in your book, so we’re wondering if this actually happened. Did you ever hear this recording? If so it must have been quite strange …

And finally, we believe that you’re planning to write a children’s book. Could you tell us a little bit about it?

Topic 2: Questions about Touching From A Distance
Deborah Curtis's response January 2006.
I can't think about the book in terms of difficult or easy to write. It was time consuming but liberating and satisfying. I felt that in not being asked for my version of events that I'd been effectively silenced. The basic storyline is a very old one - boy meet girl, boy gets to travel, boy meets another girl. It was Ian's charisma and talent and of course his illness that made the scenario different from any other.

My editor at Faber & Faber was alert to the sensitivity of the subject, so I felt secure with her. I knew she wasn't going to suggest any alterations purely for the sake of sensationalism. I don't remember them requesting any major alterations. Maybe, there were one or two colloquialisms she felt had to come out, or comments that were more surmising than logical. I wanted the book to be taken seriously.

I did my own proof reading so by the time the book was published I knew it back to front and inside out so no there were no surprises after it was published. It wasn't until I started thinking about the film that I found typos I'd missed or minor detail that I'd got wrong. The publisher will try to amend typos when possible e.g. there's an error where A Certain Ratio is called A Certain Ration; but anything bigger than that such as a new jacket to coincide with the film is at the publisher's discretion. I tried to make the book factual without colouring it with my own personal opinion of other people, mainly because I knew that in time my feelings towards other people might change. There's nothing I'd put in or take out - I wrote it mainly to help myself put the events into some kind of order and I think I achieved that.

Yes, Ian did idolise Jim Morrison and he did talk about dying and say that he wanted to die young. It was something we argued about and he would not change the way he thought. When I look back now, it's not possible to see things in any other light, let alone understand why he felt like that from such a young age.

The chapter titles in the book were chosen by faber from Ian's original lyrics. There are many proposed titles and little thoughts that Ian put onto paper. It's not always clear which are titles and which are ideas that Ian was playing around with. Much of his work could be described as an urban soundtrack. I think Soundtrack would have referred to a song but really you'd have to ask the band.

Sorry but hypnotic regression isn't my thing! If you want to get to the bottom of that then that's something you'd have to ask Bernard about.

I may have thought about writing a children's book in the past but it's definitely not on the agenda now. I think fact is easier to write than fiction. With fiction everything has to tie up neatly at the end and as you can see from my book real life just isn't like that, so to some degree the author is let off the hook.

Deborah Curtis interview 2005

Interviews conducted by email can be a hit and miss affair - with short closed questions producing short closed answers. In order to overcome this we are grouping our questions into topics and covering one topic in each email - inviting Deborah to respond however she feels appropriate.

Each email and response will be posted here

Topic 1: The lyrics
Joy Division Central email to Deborah Curtis November 2005.
I think I’d like to start off with an initial group of questions which are based around Ian’s lyrics and the conundrum of how “deep” the man was. We all know the myth that has developed of Joy Division as an intense and dark experience and it would be interesting to gain a greater insight from your perspective if that’s OK.

I have tried to ask open questions where possible but that’s not easy in a typed interview format – so please feel free to respond to the spirit of the question or put across anything you feel is relevant rather than being constrained by my wording!

OK, here we go:

Ian's plastic bag of notebooks and scribbled bits of paper has become something of a legend and a source of much speculation among Joy Division enthusiasts and I’m sure it’s one of your treasured possessions. Presumably there is a lot of unpublished stuff in there?

In TFAD you said he had a file called "Novel" in his bedroom as a teenager and supposedly he constantly wrote all the time, does this mean a lot of Ian's written work has never been seen?

Have you ever considered publishing it all, or putting it on display?

Our readers are very interested where the lyrics for Ceremony and In a Lonely Place in your book come from – and whether the versions that were finally recorded by New Order were amended or finished off by the remaining members of the band. Do you have the original hand written lyrics for these songs - and were these the source for the lyrics in your book?

Some writers painstakingly put down their innermost feelings and revelations on life down on paper while others dash off any old lyrics that fit with the song.

How important do you think the lyrics were to Ian … and did this change as time progressed? Do you think we read too much into what he wrote, or perhaps too little?

Did Ian talk to you about the music they were doing? The lyrics, the sound he wanted etc. I find it very tempting to imagine him pottering around the house humming a new song and asking you what you thought of it, or perhaps he locked himself away and kept things very much to himself? I guess this is coming back to the theme of just how intense Ian was in his songwriting and what he was trying to convey via the band.

Sometimes people involved in the Joy Division story point out that they were a bunch of young lads having a laugh. For you, what event or story would illustrate this best?

Topic 1: The lyrics
Deborah Curtis's response November 2005.
Yes - the clunk of a plastic carrier bag on a door - it was quite some time before I stopped looking up, expecting to see Ian walk in the room. Of course plastic bags have more of a rustle these days. Those little note books and sheets of paper are treasured. I wouldn't say there was a lot of unpublished stuff in there. Some of it I included in the book and much of it was stuff that he had reworked. If he liked an idea he would keep rewriting until he was a happy with it.

The 'Novel' file wasn't crammed full - I took it as an indication of his ambitions and desires in life that he bothered to label it. He spent a great deal of time thinking and planning and then when he began writing he was very industrious.

No, I haven't considered publishing it all and though it's been suggested I put it on display, I've decided against it.

As far as I know New Order had a rehearsal room recording of Ian singing Ceremony and In a Lonely Place. But I don't know how much of the lyric they had to complete themselves. New Order's finished recordings were the source for the lyrics in my book. You'd really have to ask them about that.

Ian's lyrics meant everything to him, other people's lyrics were always important to him too . He did lock himself away in his room and I wouldn't say his lyric writing ever spilled out of that room. I respected his 'muse' or 'zone' whatever you want to call it. So, no there was no pottering around the house humming a new song.

Most of the stories he told me of the fun he had with the lads were those kind of stories where you just 'had to be there' as they say. They were all laddish tales, kind of toilet jokes (literally). He was amused by someone in another band picking their nose and flicking bogeys at their girlfriend, and still laughed about it weeks afterwards. My fondest memory of being with the band was the night we set off for a take-out after setting up the gear and Hooky let me drive the van. We all had a meal from a Greek take-away before they went on stage. It was falling into place and I really felt happy and part of it.

Sunday May 29th, we get to stay up late and go out even later because we don't have to work the next day with the Memorial Day weekend, so we honor and pay tribute, specifically to Ian Curtis of Joy Division and Billy Idol, two of those whose music we love and has influenced us and countless others, not to mention the obvious fact that we can hardly let a good excuse for a party escape, so, we give you the 3 day weekend 1984 party. As always we remind you that this is a special event, so please do come out to support it, your hard working DJ's, bartenders, door and coatcheck staff thank you! Can we tell you that we had a great time, and you all looked like you had a great time at the last 1984 special event on April 23, check our web site
http://www.1984sf.com/photos_04_23_05.html
to see how happy you all looked, we don't make this stuff up.

In the front room, we pay tribute to that whiplash smile of a guy, Billy Idol. While certainly being there in London in 76' with bands like Chelsea and then Generation X, his greatest notoriety came with going solo and the fame of the video revolution that only constant rotation on early MTV could bring. Video's like White Wedding, Rebel Yell, Eyes without a Face, Catch my fall, Flesh for fantasy and Dancing with myself were in constant rotation and made him larger than life. Oh by the way, Billy has a new album out called "Devils' playground", and yes we will be giving away a copy of his new album. DJ's Damon and a special guest will play all your favorite New Wave, Rock, Pop and Top 40 "80's" music, everything from, well, Billy Idol to other bands like Queen, Blondie, The Clash, the Ramones, Prince, Bon Jovi, Def Lepard, Dramarama, Nena, Joan Jett, Hall and Oates, Madonna, Culture Club, Guns and Roses and many more, so do join us in the midnight hour. People wearing studded gloves and/or zippered pants get bonus points! Can we get a bride to be or two??

We honor Ian Curtis and Joy Division in the back room with DJ's Dangerous Dan and the Melting Girl. Join them as they play all their and your favorite Joy Division and some early New Order songs, (because we all know that New Order was the band that came after Joy Division, right?) along with all the best New Wave, Synthpop, Goth and Industrial music. Sadly as many of you know, Ian Curtis took his own life 25 years ago, May 18 1980. Joy Division was poised to move onto possible fame and mass adulation as they were to start their first United States tour... We have limited Joy Division compact Disk giveaways for this evening, a big thank you to Emiko at Warner Music for being helpful as always, please do sign up at the event for all the giveaways. You can expect to hear all your favorite back room classics from the Smiths, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, New Order, The Fixx, the Violent Femmes, INXS, Shannon, Dead or Alive, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, Until December and many many more

One night only, 1984, the world class San Francisco favorite 80's club, usually and still weekly on Thursday nights, makes a special night of it at the Cat Club, Saturday April 23. We do this rarely so as to not confuse you all, so please do take advantage of this rare opportunity, this is the Saturday night you won't have too wish 1984 is on a Saturday night, cuz it is!

We'll be paying tribute to New Order with block sets as proper tribute to the New Wave dance Gods in the back room with DJ's Dangerous Dan and the Melting Girl. We expect to have limited quantities of New Order giveaways, so get there early! You can expect the unexpected New Order song and all your favorite dance remixes of all the best New Order songs, We expect to be showing plenty of 80's video's in the back room too. Everything from, of course, New Order, Flock of Seagulls, Tones on Tail and Depeche Mode to Love and Rockets, Echo and the Bunnymen, Bauhaus and Blondie, As always in the back room, expect to be delighted with the tasteful and authentic record selection that has made the back room at 1984 the place to be as the DJ's play all the best of the New Wave, Synthpop and Goth music.

In the front room, be ready to drink and do damage with DJ Damon and a special guest. Expect to hear all your favorite Rock/Pop/New Wave and One Hit Wonders of your favorite musical Era. We play bands like Joan Jett, Frankie goes to Hollywood, The Pixies, Duran Duran, Nena, Prince, Madonna, Journey, The Clash, Devo, Madness and The Musical Youth at almost any time! Signing along to numerous songs and that odd jump-skip "dancing in the dark" Courteney Cox way can seemingly breakout anywhere in the front room, so watch your step please and try not to spill your drink on others!

Joy Division was my favorite group as a teen in the early 80s, but then I needed to stop listening to them for a while. A few years ago, I got back into them, picked up all the records, bootlegs, and extracurricular stuff I could find, including Deborah Curtis' book, "Touching From A Distance". I read the book hungrily, feeling her pain and confusion, then loaned it to my (at the time) wife. One Saturday in May, I stayed home and listened to all the records, reading the lyrics that appear in the back of the book. I had things to do that day, but I put it all aside. Needless to say, this was a moving experience. Many lyrics I wasn't sure about, or had just gotten wrong were cleared up. (Incidentally, I am convinced that on the second side of Closer, Ian Curtis gives a very clear, esoteric description of the afterlife, the different bardo states etc.)

Anyway, my wife came home, and said that she had had the same impulse that day, and so we sat together for hours listening to Joy Division, reading and discussing the lyrics together. We didn't listen to anything else that week. (Some of you may have had that experience of JD being a bit peremptory.) Anyway, she hadn't finished the book, so I turned it over to her.

A few weeks later, I looked back at the book, and noticed that his death day was May 18. I checked the calendar, and realized that it was May 18 that we had spent the day listening to JD. Like a knock on the door! Also odd is that Ian Curtis and I share the same birthday of July 15.

It was a bit eerie to discover this, but really very reassuring. Just thought I'd share.

Best wishes,
